With the Olympic champions over 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles , the US relay was clearly favored. Starting runner Jack Yerman also brought the team into the lead, which was expanded to almost eight meters ahead of the last change. Final runner Otis Davis let the German businessman, who was only slightly defeated in the 400-meter final, come up to the 200-meter mark. Then Davis picked up the pace and was able to keep his opponent in check. The US team improved the world record by more than a second and a half. The German relay team, which won the silver medal, also stayed below the previous record time and at the same time set a new European record. Bronze went to the runners of the West Indian Federation.
