Johannes Kaiser (athlete)

Johannes Kaiser (born February 27, 1936 in Jüngersdorf , Düren district ; † December 17, 1996 in Zurich ) was a German athlete and Olympic medalist who - starting for the Federal Republic - achieved the world's best 400 meters in the late 1950s and early 1960s Belonged to runners . Kaiser started for VfL Wolfsburg , 1960/1961 for ASV Köln and from 1962 for Wuppertaler SV . In his playing days he was 1.84 m tall and weighed 81 kg. He died by suicide.

His greatest success is the silver medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome with the 4 x 400 meter relay (3: 02.7 min, European record, together with Hans-Joachim Reske , Manfred Kinder and Carl Kaufmann ; Johannes Kaiser as third runner), for which he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on December 9, 1960 . He started at these games for the Federal Republic in a joint German team.

He had also won the silver medal with the 4 x 400 meter relay at the European Championships in 1958 (3: 08.2 min, together with Carl Kaufmann, Manfred Poerschke and Karl-Friedrich Haas ; Johannes Kaiser as third runner)

At national level he was German champion five times: in 1961 over 400 meters and with the 4-by-100-meter relay and in 1962, 1963 and 1964 with the 4-by-400-meter relay.
