Except for the Australian Norma Thrower, all medal contenders reached the final. In the run-up to and then in the semifinals, the favored Soviet hurdler Irina Press had equalized the Olympic record and then improved it, missing the world record by only a tenth of a second. Irina Press, sister of the shot putter and discus thrower Tamara Press , was also extremely successful as a pentathlete during these years. She lived up to her role as a favorite and won this race. Silver went to the British Carole Quinton. The German Gisela Birkemeyer got off to a bad start. She initially struggled to get away from last place, but still won the bronze medal with great fighting spirit. Behind her, the second British rider, Mary Bignal, placed fourth in front of the two other Soviet runners Galina Bystrowa and Rimma Koscheljowa.
