Wanda dos Santos

Wanda dos Santos (born June 1, 1932 in São Paulo ) is a former Brazilian athlete who was successful in the 80-meter hurdles and long jump . She won four medals at Pan American Games and fifteen medals at South American Championships , including ten gold medals.

Career

Wanda dos Santos was fourteen years old when she won the 80 meter hurdles and long jump at the South American Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 1947, behind the Argentine Noëmi Simonetto . Two years later she won the South American Championships in Lima in 1949 in both of her specialty disciplines. In the long jump, Wanda dos Santos won two gold, silver and bronze medals each at the South American Championships, and in the 80-meter hurdles she started a series of six titles in a row in 1949, an achievement that was only achieved by the shot- putter Elisângela Adriano .

At the first Pan American Games in 1951, Wanda dos Santos won the bronze medal in the long jump behind two Chilean women, and in the hurdles sprint she finished fourth. In the next three events, she received a hurdle medal, with second place in 1959 behind the Cuban Bertha Díaz her greatest success.

Wanda dos Santos took part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 and in Rome in 1960. In 1952 she reached the semi-finals in the hurdles and finished 21st in the long jump, in 1960 she was eliminated in the hurdles prelim.

With a height of 1.59 meters, her competition weight was 60 kilograms.
