1952 South American Athletics Championships
The XVII. The South American Athletics Championships took place from May 3 to May 11, 1952 in Buenos Aires . After the championships had always taken place in the odd years since 1927, the organizers now changed the rhythm to avoid the Pan American Games, which were held for the first time in 1951 . As a result, the South American Championships took place for the third time in the same year as the Olympic Games after 1920 and 1924. The most successful participant was the Argentinian sprinter Gerardo Bönnhoff with two first and two second places. In the women's category, the two Argentineans Gladys Erbetta and Ingeborg Mello each won two titles.
From 1924 to 1949, a men's cross-country competition was held as part of the South American Championships. This was taken out of the program together with the 3000 meter run in 1952. For this, the 3,000-meter obstacle course was on the program for the first time.
Men's competitions
The men's team championship was won by Argentina with 200 points, followed by the Chileans with 185 points and the Brazilian team with 178.5 points. Behind them Peru scored 62 points, Uruguay 18.5 points, Paraguay 5 points and Ecuador one point.
