Ingeborg Mello

Ingeborg Mello de Preiss (born January 4, 1919 in Germany ; † October 25, 2009 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine athlete who was successful in the shot put and discus throw . She won two gold medals at Pan American Games and fifteen medals at South American Championships , including seven gold medals.

Career

Ingeborg Mello, who was born in Germany, came to Argentina at the age of 19. Between 1940 and 1962 she won 22 national championship titles in the three throwing disciplines. Her last appearance at the state championships was in 1969 when she was fourth again in the shot put.

At the South American Championships, she won her first title in 1941 with the ball. In 1947, 1949 and 1952 she won both the shot put and discus throw titles. In 1947 she also received silver in the javelin throw , in 1949 bronze. In 1948 at the Olympic Games in London , she finished ninth in the shot put and eighth in the discus throw. At the first Pan-American Games in 1951 in front of a home crowd in Buenos Aires, she achieved a double victory with ball and discus. The following year she reached the final in the discus throw at the Olympic Games in Helsinki and took twelfth place. She won her last international medal at the South American Championships in 1963 at the age of 44.

With a height of 1.69 meters, her competition weight was 70 kilograms.
