South American Athletics Championships 1963
The XXII. The South American Athletics Championships were held in Cali from June 29 to July 7, 1963 . The most successful participant was the Venezuelan all-rounder Héctor Thomas , who not only won the decathlon but also won the long jump and javelin competitions. In the women's category, the Brazilian Erica da Silva also won three gold medals.
So far the South American Championships have always taken place in April or May. Since the Pan American Games were held at the end of April 1963 , the South American Championships were first held in June and July.
Men's competitions
The men's team was won by Venezuela's team with 181 points, ahead of the Brazilians with 163 points and the Argentines with 114 points. Behind the Colombians with 103 points, Peru achieved 37 points, Chile 11 points and Uruguay 7 points. Ecuador didn't score a point.

The women’s team championship was won by the Brazilians with 110 points, followed by the Argentina team with 93 points and the Colombians with 18 points. Behind Venezuela with 15 points, Chile received ten points, Peru 6 points and Uruguay 2 points. Like both men, there was no point for the women from Ecuador.
