South American Athletics Championships 1971

The XXVI. The South American Athletics Championships took place in Lima from October 9 to 17, 1971 . The most successful participants were the Peruvian sprinter Fernando Acevedo and the Chilean long-distance runner Edmundo Warnke , each with two gold medals and one bronze. In the women’s category, Uruguayan Josefa Vicent also won two golds and two bronze medals.

Men's competitions

The men's team was won by the Brazilian team with 155 points, ahead of the Argentina team with 129 points and the Venezuelans with 99 points. Behind the Chileans with 97 points, the Colombians achieved 80 points, followed by Peru with 69 points and Uruguay with 15 points. The Paraguayans received 5 points and Ecuador 1 point.
