1981 South American Athletics Championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The XXXI. The South American Athletics Championships took place from November 5th to 8th, 1981 in La Paz . Since La Paz is at an altitude of more than 3000 meters above sea level, the performance in the speed strength disciplines were favored, the performance in the endurance disciplines, however, fell well below the normal performance standard. Instead of the marathon, a half marathon was held. The women's 3,000-meter and the women's 400-meter hurdles were both scheduled for the first time at the South American Championships; the heptathlon replaced the pentathlon that had been held since 1969.

The most successful participant was the Colombian long-distance runner Víctor Mora with three gold medals. In the women's category , the Brazilian Conceição Geremias also won three gold medals.

Men's competitions

The men's team championship was won by the Brazilian team with 251 points, ahead of the Chileans with 132 points and the Argentina team with 63 points, as well as the Colombians with 58 and the Bolivians with 54 points. Behind the Peruvians with 35 points, the Paraguayans achieved 15 points, followed by Uruguay with 9 points and Ecuador and Panama with 8 points.

  1. ^ According to Kramer: South American Track and Field Championships . Page 118 Colombia has 78 points. Since the gbrathletics side Argentina also leads in third place with 63 points, a typo was assumed for the Colombians' score.
