José Luíz Barbosa (born May 27, 1961 in Três Lagoas , Mato Grosso do Sul ) is a former Brazilian athlete whose specialty was the 800-meter run .

Sporting successes

Barbosa participated in four Olympic Games ( 1984 , 1988, 1992 and 1996 ), but missed a medal every time they participated. His best placings were fourth at the 1992 Barcelona games and sixth in Seoul in 1988 .

Barbosa celebrated his greatest success by winning the gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis in 1987 after a tactical 800-meter race in 1: 47.49 min. In the same year Barbosa won the bronze medal at the Open Air World Championships in Rome in 1: 43.76 min behind Billy Konchellah from Kenya (1: 43.06 min) and the British Peter Elliott (1: 43.41 min). At the next World Championships , four years later in Tokyo , Konchellah was again in the final (1: 43.99 min) in front of Barbosa, who won silver this time in 1: 44.24 min.

At the indoor world championships in 1993 Barbosa was considered a high favorite, but retired after a bump with Nico Motchebon .

Barbosa celebrated his last victory at major international events at the 1995 Pan American Games .
