Life

He was the last of the generation of British middle distance athletes who dominated international competitions in the 1980s, even if his successes did not quite match those of Sebastian Coe , Steve Cram and Steve Ovett .

In 1983 he had his breakthrough to the world class in the 800 meter run . After winning behind the Spaniard Colomán Trabado silver at the European Indoor Athletics Championships , he was fourth at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Two years later, starting for England , he won bronze at the 1986 Commonwealth Games behind Steve Cram and the Scottish Tom McKean . At the 1987 World Championships in Rome, he won silver in a pure speed race behind the Kenyan Billy Konchellah .

The following year he qualified not only over 800 m, but also over 1500 m for the Olympic Games in Seoul . Over 800 m he missed the bronze medal over 800 meters by 0.06 seconds against Saïd Aouita , and over 1500 m he won silver in a very close track race behind Peter Rono , but ahead of Jens-Peter Herold and Steve Cram.

In 1990 he won over 1500m gold at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland . In the run-up to the European Championships in Split in 1990 , he was therefore a favorite, but was not in top form after an injury and was fourth in the 1500 m.
