Mónica Regonesi

Mónica Patricia Regonesi Miranda (born April 27, 1961 ) is a former Chilean athlete who specializes in medium and long-distance running.

Success as a teenager and junior

Mónica Regonesi first appeared in 1973 when she improved the Chilean junior record in the high jump. In 1975 she achieved the same with the Chilean junior record in triathlon.

She reached her first podium in 1976 at the South American Youth Championships in Santiago de Chile . With the 4 x 400 meter relay , she won the championship. The following year she won the bronze medal in the 800-meter run in Rio de Janeiro . In 1978 Mónica Regonesi started with the juniors. At the South American Junior Championships in São Paulo , she came second in the 1,500-meter run .

Success with the seniors

In 1979 Regonesi started with the seniors for the first time. At the Athletics South American Championships in 1979 in Bucaramanga , Colombia , she reached third place over 1500 meters.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Mónica Regonesi also turned to the marathon . In 1981 she was the first Chilean woman to finish a marathon under 3 hours (2:59:02 h). In 1982 she took part in the South American Games in Rosario , Argentina . Here she won two medals, once the silver medal over 1500 meters and once the gold medal over 3000 meters. She got bronze again at the Pan American Games in 1983 in Caracas, again over 3000 meters. She reached 6th place over 1500 meters.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Mónica Regonesi started both in the 3,000-meter run and in the marathon, which was held for the first time among women. She could not finish her run over 3000 meters, in the marathon she finished 32nd of 44 athletes after 2:44:44 h.

Regonesi was able to celebrate further successes at the South American Championships. In 1985 in Santiago de Chile she won the races over 3000 and 10,000 meters, over 1500 meters she won silver. In 1987 in São Paulo she defended her title over 3000 meters. She finished second over 10,000 meters.

At the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 , she was unable to qualify for the finals either in the 3,000-meter run or in the 10,000-meter run.

In the following years Regonesi concentrated on the marathon. In 1988 she finished third in the Frankfurt Marathon . She also took third place in a marathon in San Sebastián in 1992 .

Later sporting career

In 2007, at the age of 46, Mónica Regonesi took part in the World Masters Athletics Championships in Riccione, Italy. Here she won the marathon and was third over 10,000 meters.
