South American Athletics Championships 1969

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The XXV. The South American Athletics Championships took place in Quito from October 4 to 12, 1969 . The most successful participant was the Chilean middle distance athlete Jorge Grosser with three gold medals. In the women's category , the Brazilian Silvina Pereira won four gold medals.

Quito is 2850 meters above sea level, which is the first time that the South American Championships were held under high-altitude air conditions. The Olympic Games in Mexico City in the previous year showed that these conditions promote performance for sprinters, but reduce performance for long-distance runners . If you compare the results of Quito with the results of Buenos Aires in 1967 , the victory times in the medium and long distances in particular are significantly weaker than two years earlier, but in 1969 new championship records were set for men in all four jumping disciplines.

Since the women's competition was introduced in 1939 , the women's program had remained the same. In 1969, three disciplines were added with the 400-meter run, the 800-meter run and the pentathlon.

Men's competitions

The men's team championship was won by the Chilean team with 145 points, ahead of the Argentina team with 141 points and the Brazilians with 121 points. The Colombians achieved 96 points ahead of Peru with 62 points and Ecuador with 44 points. The Venozolans received 32 points and Uruguay 9 points.
