Darwin Piñeyrúa

Darwin Piñeyrúa (born December 23, 1945 in Montevideo , † February 11, 1978 ) was a Uruguayan athlete .

Career

The 1.85 meter tall Piñeyrúa was active in the hammer throwing discipline . Piñeyrúa finished 3rd in the 1969 South American Athletics Championships . At the South American Athletics Championships in 1971 , he won silver. That year he also took part in the Pan American Games and came third . He was a member of the Uruguayan squad at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and served as the team's standard bearer . At the games he reached the final as 31st in qualification. In 1974 and 1975 he was South American champion. He finished the competition at the Pan American Games in 1975 in eighth place.

He still holds the Uruguayan national record today (as of June 15, 2015) . He achieved this personal career best with a width of 63.18 meters on May 4, 1974 in Montevideo.

Piñeyrúa, older brother of the journalist Ricardo Piñeyrúa, died at the age of only 32 years of complications from melanoma .
