Overbygård's burned down cellar was excavated near Stae, east of Aalborg in southeastern Vendsyssel in Denmark . Thanks to the ceramics found , it can be dated to the time immediately before the turn of the century.

description

The basement, which is 1.7 m deep in the natural ground, has a size of 4.2 × 2.6 m. The entrance is in the middle of one long side. A ramp with a length of 4.8 m, which hits at an obtuse angle, leads down to the level of the basement floor. On the opposite wall opens a narrow stone shaft, which undoubtedly served for ventilation. The roof was supported by two rows of four round oak posts each. These posts rest on stones that are about 35 cm below the tamped clay soil. The cellar walls consisted of oak planks inserted into a basic threshold.

Finds

In addition to charred parts of the building, the basement contained more than 60 mostly undamaged clay vessels as well as a number of wooden containers, some smoothing stones , around 100 kg of unskilled clay for making vessels, large quantities of charred grain and seeds, a couple of spout axes and two single-edged iron swords in wooden sheaths. Because of this large and rich content, it is natural to consider the basement as a storage room. Overbygård's cellar was reconstructed about 50 m east of the Iron Age house on the open-air site of the Moesgård Museum .

analogy

Immediately behind Moesgård's Iron Age house, the Grønheden cellars at Sæby in Vendsyssel have been restored. This cellar, which is only partially finished, also dates from the time around the birth of Christ. The exit to the cellar was lined with wickerwork. A stone corridor led to the stone cellar and from there to the outside. The entire system was about 30 m long. One can only speculate about the purpose. Perhaps the facilities are a different form of basement , as found at nearby Løgten Mark .
