Basement of Løgten Mark

Løgten Mark is located near Frederikshavn in Vendsyssel in northern Jutland in Denmark . The archaeological site is known for its basement , which only occurs in a very limited area in Denmark.

Reference to the Jernalderkældrene

The first of today's nine Danish basements was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century in a field in Stidsholt near Saeby in connection with an Iron Age house. It is built into the ground like a corridor and has side walls made of layered dry masonry . Above it was covered with flat stone slabs. The corridor is about 10 meters long. In the middle it widens to an oval chamber of about 1.5 by 2.0 meters.

Individual copies of the basement can be found at Donbæk, Bækmoinen and Dalgård on the road that leads via Gærum to Ǿster Vrå. Most of the other basements, here they are called stenbyggede kælder or jernalderkældrene (German: Stone or Iron Age Cellars ), are in Løgten Mark, near Frederikshavn. They have different shapes, mostly oval room bays connected by corridors. The Løgten Mark facilities were not found in the context of house remains.

Overall, the facilities have not been well researched and most likely date from the late Bronze and Iron Ages .

In Scandinavia, there is only one other, more than 30.0 meter long basement of unknown age and mysterious function known from Lønngangen near the Olavskiche of Avaldsnes in Norway .
