Two French women and two Jamaicans qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one starter each from Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria and the USA.
The actual favorite, the reigning world champion Gail Devers from the USA, had to give up her semi-finals due to an injury. The 1997 vice world champion and reigning European champion Svetla Dimitrova from Bulgaria did not make it to the final either. Thus, the favorite role fell to the Nigerian vice world champion Glory Alozie. But she had strong competition, especially from fourth place in the World Cup, Olga Schischigina from Kazakhstan.
In the final, Alozie took the lead at the first hurdle. At the height of the fifth hurdle, she had worked a one-meter lead and almost looked like the Olympic champion. But Schischigina, who started weakly and was still in penultimate position halfway through, caught up and passed the last hurdle past Alozie. Olga Schischigina won the first ever Olympic gold medal for Kazakhstan after the country had become independent. Glory Alozie crossed the finish line in second, three hundredths of a second behind. She won the first Nigerian medal in the discipline. US athlete Melissa Morrison came in third eight hundredths of a second behind Alozie. Delloreen Ennis-London from Jamaica was fourth, ahead of Cuban Aliuska López and French Nicole Ramalalanirina.
