Two Americans qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one starter each from Brazil, Italy, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the Ukraine.
Two hurdlers with excellent performances in the Olympic season were considered favorites. These were the American Angelo Taylor and the South African Llewellyn Herbert. Here you met the Italian world champion Fabrizio Mori. Other contenders for top positions were above all World Cup fourth Eronilde de Araújo from Brazil and World Cup fifth Paweł Januszewski from Poland, who are also reigning European champions .
The final was led for a long time by the surprisingly strong Hadi Soua'an Al-Somaily from Saudi Arabia. Taylor, who started on lane one, came closer to Al-Somaily at the end of the target curve. At the start of the home stretch, however, the runner from Saudi Arabia was still ahead. Just behind him was Taylor in front of his compatriot James Carter. Not far back were de Araújo, Januszewski and Mori almost on the same line. In the last few meters it got closer and closer between Taylor and Al-Somaily, who showed great stamina. At the finish, Angelo Taylor won the gold medal in 47.50 s with just three hundredths of a second ahead. As second, Hadi Soua'an Al-Somaily improved his Asian record from the semi-finals by 61 hundredths of a second. Another 18 hundredths of a second behind him, Llewellyn Herbert won the bronze medal. The ranks four to six were occupied by James Carter, Eronilde de Araújo and Paweł Januszewski.
Angelo Taylor won the 17th gold medal for the USA over 400 meter hurdles in the 22nd Olympic final . It was the fifth US victory in a row in this discipline.
Hadi Soua'an Al-Somaily won the first Olympic medal for Saudi Arabia.
