There was no clear favorite. The field stayed close together for a long time. With three laps to go, New Zealander Murray Halberg took the lead and stepped up the pace to such an extent that he was able to run out a lead of 25 meters within one lap. Before the last lap, the lead over the German Hans Grodotzki was still almost 20 meters. But the two extremely fast laps had exhausted Halberg. Grodotzki and behind him the Pole Kazimierz Zimny came closer and closer over the last 400 meters. But Halberg fought doggedly and was able to save the gold medal by eight meters. Grodotzki won the first of his two silver medals here, the second followed a week later over 10,000 meters . Zimny was third ahead of the German Friedrich Janke.

Murray Halberg won the first medal and at the same time New Zealand's first Olympic victory in this discipline.

Kazimierz Zimny won the first Polish medal over 5000 meters .

September 2nd was a big day for New Zealand coach Arthur Lydiard . First his protégé Peter Snell became Olympic champion over 800 meters and a short time later his student Murray Halberg won the 5000 meters.
