Albie Thomas

Albert George "Albie" Thomas (born February 8, 1935 in Hurstville City , New South Wales , † October 27, 2013 in Sydney ) was an Australian middle and long distance runner .

Career

Since 1953, Thomas was trained by Percy Cerutty . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he was fifth over 5000 m .

In 1958 he set a world record over three miles on July 9 in Dublin with 13: 10.8 minutes . At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff , he won silver over three miles and bronze in the mile run . Then on August 6th in Dublin he set the pace for Herb Elliott in his world record in the mile run (3: 54.5 min); Thomas himself stayed under four minutes for the first time with 3: 58.6. The next day he set a world record over two miles with 8: 32.0 minutes.

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he was eleventh over 5000 m and eliminated over 1500 m in the preliminary run. In 1962 he was each fifth over a mile and three miles at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth . Two years later he did not get past the preliminary round at the Olympic Games in Tokyo over 1500 m and 5000 m.

Four times he was Australian champion in the mile run (1962-1965) and three times over three miles (1957-1959). In 1963 he was New South Wales Champion in the marathon and in 1975 Senior World Champion in the M40 class over 1500 m and 3000 m .

Albie Thomas started for the St George District Athletic Club (SGDAC).
