Jim Beatty

James "Jim" Tully Beatty (born October 28, 1934 in New York ) is a former American long-distance runner who was the first to run the mile in the hall on February 10, 1962 under 4 minutes and temporarily held all American long-distance records .

Life

Beatty came from a poor Catholic family of Italian descent and mostly ran barefoot as a child. From the age of 10 until he graduated from high school, he would deliver newspapers in front of school at 4:30 in the morning. After graduating from high school in Charlotte , North Carolina , he received an athletics scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953 , where he became one of the best middle distance athletes in the United States. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1957, he interrupted his career before joining Mihály Iglói 's training group in California in 1959 , and with intensive interval training , he developed into one of the best medium and long distance athletes in the world within less than a year. He won twice at USA against USSR , ran three world and 14 American records. At the 1960 Summer Olympics , he had won the US Trials, but was eliminated over 5000 m in the preliminary run. In 1962 he held five American records in the short long distances. In 1962 he was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award for best amateur athlete in the USA. In 1963 he finished second at the Pan-American Games . He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1990, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1963, and the Greater Charlotte Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. After his career as an athlete, he worked as a motivational speaker and served for the Democrats for many years Member of the North Carolina State Parliament . His attempt to become a US Senator failed. In his playing days, Little Jim Beatty was 1.67 m tall and weighed 57 kg.
