James E. Sullivan Award
The James E. Sullivan Award is considered the Oscar of American amateur sport. It has been awarded annually by the Amateur Athletic Union since 1930 and is named after the former President of the AAU, James E. Sullivan . This award is five years older than the Heisman Trophy . The best athletes are proposed by the public not only according to their performance, but also according to “character, sportiness, leadership quality and how they deal with amateur ideals”. These proposals are reduced to around ten by a committee. From these, representatives of the sports press, former award winners and other sports officials select the winner. Previous winners are not automatically excluded, but are very rarely re-elected. The award ceremony represents a highlight of the ball season, similar to the election of the athlete of the year.
