Joseph Gregory (Greg) Rice Jr. (born January 3, 1916 in Deer Lodge , Montana , † May 19, 1991 in Hackensack , New Jersey ) was the best American long-distance runner of the years 1938-1943. In 1940 he was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award for best American amateur athlete .

Life

His parents moved to Missoula , Montana shortly after he was born , where he attended the local high school. Here he was Montana State High School Champion three years in a row over the 880 yards and mile. He then got a scholarship from the Catholic Notre Dame , where he won the NCAA championship over 2 miles in 1937 and 1939 and successfully graduated in 1939 with the BA exam in business administration. After graduating, he went to New York City , where he started for the New York Athletic Club . In 1940 he ran American records over 2 and 3 miles, was American champion over 5000 m and beat Finnish champion Taisto Mäki . For this success he received the James E. Sullivan Award . Between 1939 and 1943 he was five times American champion (indoor and outdoor). He won 65 races in a row. He set a total of 8 world records on the long distances. Since the Olympic Games in 1940 were canceled, he lost a certain chance of a medal. In 1943, like many of his generation, he had to end his sporting career because he volunteered for the United States Maritime Service in order not to be drafted. After the war he worked as an accountant for a toy factory, but remained involved in athletics as a referee. In 1984 he retired.
