He then retired from the sport at the age of only 22 to market his popularity. However, he had already had 16 years of intensive training behind him, as he had learned to swim in the sea in Hawaii at the age of 3 and started systematic swimming training in a club at the age of 6. A total of nine Olympic victories go to his account, including two at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City . Mark Spitz set 33 world records in the course of his career, 26 in individual disciplines and seven in relay competitions.

His attempt to qualify for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona at the age of 41 failed.

It was not until the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing that Mark Spitz's legendary achievement of seven world records including a gold medal at the same Olympic Games event was set by his compatriot Michael Phelps . Since he won a total of 8 gold medals, Mark Spitz was surpassed in this regard after 36 years.
