Joseph Schooling (born June 16, 1995 ) is a Singaporean swimming athlete and the first Olympic champion in his country.

Schooling is the son of Colin and May Yim Schooling. His great-uncle is the high jumper Lloyd Valberg , who in 1948 was the first athlete to compete for Singapore at the Olympic Games. Schooling grew up in Singapore until he was 14, where he met his great role model Michael Phelps during swimming training in 2008 , who was preparing for the Olympic Games in Beijing , and had himself photographed with him. From 2009 he attended the Bolles School, a boarding school in Florida, for five years . There he was trained by the former swimmer and bronze medalist Sergio Lopez Miro . After graduating from Bolles School, Schooling began studying at the University of Texas , where he has since been coached by Eddie Reese , coach of the American swimming team at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Schooling achieved first successes at the Southeast Asian Games in 2011, 2013 and 2015, where he won a total of 15 gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal on freestyle, butterfly, medley and relay courses. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games he won a silver medal over the 100 m butterfly and at the 2015 World Championships a bronze medal over the same distance.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Schooling swam the fastest time in the semi-finals of the 100 m butterfly with 50.83 seconds , setting a new Asian record. In the final he broke the Asian record again with 50.39 seconds and also set a new Olympic record. He succeeded in beating his great role model Michael Phelps, the holder of the previous Olympic record, in a direct comparison. Phelps finished second in 51.14 s , together with Chad le Clos and László Cseh . With his victory, Schooling became Singapore's first Olympic champion in the history of the Olympic Games and received a prize of one million Singapore dollars (about 655,000 euros) from his country .

At the 2017 Swimming World Championships in Budapest , Schooling 50 m Butterfly set a new Asian record twice, first in the run-up with 23.05 s and then in the semifinals with 22.93 s. In the final, he then reached fifth place with 22.95 s. Over the 100 m butterfly he came in third place in the finals in 50.83 s, at the same time as the Briton James Guy and thus won a bronze medal.

Schooling defended his title over 100 m butterfly at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018 and set a new record for the Asian Games with a victory time of 51.03 seconds. In addition, he also won the 50 m butterfly and won a bronze medal with 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m freestyle relays.
