Swimming pool
Medley swimming is a swimming competition with four changing swimming styles. According to the competition rules of the German Swimming Association (DSV), the following four types of swimming must be used one after the other:
Each discipline accounts for a quarter of the total distance. There is no clear definition of freestyle in these rules , it just says that "any other type of swim except breaststroke, butterfly or backstroke may be swum". In practice, this means that there is usually a scratch because the crawl is the fastest way to swim.
In the individual competition, the Olympic medley swimming is held over 200 and 400 m, on the short course (25 m) there is also the 100 m medley.
In the tier relay, four swimmers each complete one of the four swimming techniques. The order has been changed so that the backstroke swimmer starting in the water is not hindered by an arriving relay swimmer: backstroke, chest, butterfly and freestyle. They swim 100 m each. On the short course there is also the 4 × 50 m layer relay.
