Don Schollander

Donald Arthur "Don" Schollander (born April 30, 1946 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is a former American swimmer .

Schollander began swimming as a kindergarten child in his uncle Newt Perry's swimming school in Florida . He moved to Lake Oswego with his parents in elementary school , where he helped his school win the Oregon Championship. In order to improve himself technically under the best supervision, he moved to Santa Clara (California) in 1962 and trained with George Haines at the Santa Clara Swim Club . Here he won three AAU American club championships . Here he belonged u. a. to the Delta Kappa Epsilon (Phi chapter) Fraternity , the same as the future American President George W. Bush . At the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 , he won four gold medals. In addition to the Olympic victories with the 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m freestyle relay , he also won the 100 m and 400 m freestyle. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico , he won gold in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. In total, he set 20 world records.

In 1964 Schollander was honored with the Associated Press' Athlete of the Year award . In the same year he also received the James E. Sullivan Award as the best amateur athlete of the year in the USA. In 1965 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame . After finishing his sporting career, he moved back to Lake Oswego, where he works as a freelance real estate agent and developer.
