Paul Neumann (swimmer)
Paul Neumann (born June 13, 1875 in Vienna ; † February 9, 1932 there ) was an Austrian swimmer .
Life
Paul Neumann was among the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens over 500 m freestyle, the first Olympic champion . His first sporting success was the Austrian championship title in river swimming in 1892. Shortly after the Olympic Games, he emigrated to the USA to study medicine in Chicago . He was named Dr. Paul Newman US champion over the half mile and set world records over two, three, four and five miles. He also won the US and Canadian Freestyle Championships.
In 1984 Neumann was posthumously inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and in 1986 into the International Swimming Sports Hall of Fame .
