Career

Olympic Games 2008

2008 Sun took at the age of 16 years at the Olympic Games on home soil in Beijing and it joined some freestyle distances on. In the “Water Cube” swimming center , however, he was unable to secure a top spot. He finished 28th over 400 m and tenth place with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. Although he reached the final over 1500 m, he finished last, almost 25 seconds behind the winner, Oussama Mellouli .

Just one year later he won the bronze medal over the same distance at the World Championships in Rome and a few months later he swam to three Asian championship titles . After the Asian Games in 2010 , in which he won two gold and two silver medals, he was named Young Talent of the Year by the TV station CCTV .

Due to the performances shown during the season, Sun was one of the hopes of his country at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai , to which he arrived with four world bests of the year. In the 800 m freestyle he won his first world title ahead of the Canadian Ryan Cochrane ; He also finished the 1500 m freestyle well ahead of Cochrane and undercut Grant Hackett's ten-year-old world record .

2012 Summer Olympics

On the first day of competition of the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Sun swam favored and with a new Asian record for a gold medal in the 400 m freestyle and had a lead of almost two seconds over the defending champion Park Tae-hwan . This was followed by a second place in the 200 m freestyle and the relay bronze medal over four times the distance.

On the last day of the London swimming competition, Sun showed his class again. In the 1500 m freestyle he improved his own world record by more than three seconds and relegated Ryan Cochrane and defending champion Oussama Mellouli to their places. In this race he initially had a false start, but was not disqualified because he was obviously distracted by unrest in the audience.

At the 2013 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, Sun won gold three times.

Doping ban 2014

In May 2014. He has been at the national championships positive for the year to date on the doping list standing stimulant trimetazidine tested and banned for three months.

At the 2015 World Swimming Championships he was world champion in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle. Sun Yang caused a sensation when he did not start the 1500 m freestyle in Kazan, Russia, for reasons that had not yet been clarified, and had not signed off before the start. As the reigning Olympic champion and with very strong times in the heats, he was considered the favorite for the distance. The media suspected that the withdrawal was linked to an incident involving a Brazilian swimmer. There had been fights in the swimming pool here. Sun later cited heart problems as the reason. In the run-up, there were protests about Sun's participation because of the positive doping tests from 2014.

In September he won gold in the 1,500 and 400 m freestyle at the Asian Games and in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.

Olympic Games 2016

In 2016 he became Olympic champion in the 200 m freestyle.

At the 2017 World Swimming Championships in Budapest, the then 25-year-old won gold medals in the 200 m and 400 m freestyle in July. He finished fifth over the 800 m.

Prevented doping control 2018

In September 2018, Sun evaded an unannounced doping control. According to a report by the world association FINA, it was said to have been turbulent that evening at Sun's property in the Chinese province of Zhejiang, after all, Sun Yang gave at least a blood sample, but no urine sample. However, a security guard later smashed the blood sample container with a hammer. Sun was standing next to it and used the flashlight function of his cell phone to provide light. WADA representative Richard Young strongly supported this statement. "The doping control officer wanted to leave the house with the blood sample," he said: "Sun Yang and his entourage made it clear: there is no way the inspector will do that."
In January 2019, FINA acquitted Yang of allegations of fraud and argued that the formal criteria for the inspection had been violated because the inspectors' legitimacy was not available in triplicate. WADA appealed against this decision and referred to a questionable interpretation of the applicable regulations. In November 2019, Sun Yang stated before the CAS International Court of Justice in Montreux that, in his opinion, the inspectors could not be sufficiently identified at the time. “During the inspection, I noticed that the inspectors didn't have any papers with them to identify them as inspectors,” said the 27-year-old.

At the 2019 World Swimming Championships in South Korea, he won gold medals in the 200 m and 400 m freestyle. In protest about the way FINA had dealt with the doping allegations against Sun, the runner-up in the 400 m race, the Australian Mack Horton, refused to stand on the podium with the Chinese and refused to take a joint winner's photo. Germany's team spokesman Jacob Heidtmann joined the protest : "That he swims here is a cheek for all clean athletes, for everyone who stands up for clean sport."

The International Sports Court decided in February 2020 to ban Sun for "manipulating a doping test" for eight years. In doing so, he followed the arguments of WADA, which had lodged an objection to the FINA decision. Since the decision is not retroactive, Sun is allowed to keep the 2019 world championship titles. This means that China's “swimming star” is blocked for the Olympic Games in Tokyo (2021), among other things . He then announced that he would raise an objection.

Personal

In November 2013, it was revealed that Sun had caused a property damage car accident in eastern China. Since he did not have a driver's license at the time of the accident, he was sentenced to a week's imprisonment. He apologized publicly and stated that due to the intensive training he did not have sufficient knowledge of the legal situation.
