Giorgio Lamberti

Giorgio Lamberti (born January 28, 1969 in Brescia ) is a former Italian swimmer .

At the age of 6 he started swimming to strengthen his body. At the age of 17 he became Italian champion for the first time. His first major international appearance was at the 1987 European Championships in Strasbourg , when he won the silver medal in the 200 m freestyle . Two years later he became European champion over 100 m and 200 m freestyle at the European Championships in Bonn in 1989 . At the same time, he set a new world record in the 200 m freestyle, which was to last for 10 years. In 1991 he was then at the swimming world championships in Perth, both in the 200 m freestyle, and surprisingly with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay in Italy, world champion. At the Olympic Games, however, he could not win a medal.

In 1989 he was on the La Gazzetta dello Sport to Italy's athlete of the year and also to Europe's Swimmer of the Year chosen. In 1993 Lamberti ended his career as a swimmer. In 2004 he was inducted into the hall of fame of international swimming .
