Yannick Agnel (born June 9, 1992 in Nîmes ) is a former French freestyle swimmer . In 2012 he won at the Olympic Games in London the gold medal over 200 meters freestyle and the French 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay. In 2013 he became world champion in the 200 m freestyle. He is the French record holder for the 200 and 400 meters freestyle.

Athletic career

In 2009 Yannick Agnel won the titles over 200 m and 400 m and with the 4 × 200-meter relay at the European Junior Championships. At the European Junior Championships in 2010 he improved the French record over 400 m to 3: 46.26 minutes when he won a gold medal.

In 2010 he became European champion over 400 m and broke the French record again. As the starting swimmer of the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay, which took third place, he also improved his own national record to 1: 45.83 min.

At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai he finished fifth over 200 m in a French record time of 1: 44.99 minutes and sixth over 400 m in 3: 45.24 minutes. With the freestyle relay he won the silver medal over 4 × 200 m.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 he overtook the American Ryan Lochte as the final swimmer in the 4 × 100 meter race on the last lane and surprisingly secured his team the Olympic victory in 3: 09.93 min. In the individual race over 200 m he won his second gold medal in a time of 1: 43.14 minutes, which again improved the national record. Finally he won the silver medal with France in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. In the same year he set a new world record in the French short course championships with 3: 32.27 min over 400 m and a new European record with 7: 29.17 min over 800 m. Agnel was named European Swimmer of the Year in 2012 .

At the World Championships in Barcelona in 2013 , like the Olympic Games, he won the 200 m title and with the French 4 × 100 meter relay. In preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Agnel moved from trainer Fabrice Pellerin to the training group of Phelps trainer Bob Bowman in Baltimore , USA. In the games he was eliminated in the prerun in the 200 m freestyle and the then 24-year-old then announced his retirement.
