Paul Biedermann (born August 7, 1986 in Halle (Saale) ) is a former German swimming athlete . In 2009 he became world champion in the 200 and 400 meter freestyle. He is the first person to swim 200 meters freestyle in under 1:40 minutes.

Career

Paul Biedermann failed the seahorse test as a child . Biedermann was able to record his first major success at the European Championships in Eindhoven in 2008 over 200 meters freestyle, thereby improving Michael Groß's German record from 1984. A few weeks later, he improved his record to 1 at the German Championships in Berlin: 46.37 min. In the finals at the Olympic Games in Beijing , Biedermann was able to improve again and improve his German record to 1: 46.00 min.

Although Biedermann had to take a six-week training break in the winter of 2008/09 due to illness, he was able to set a European record over 200 meters freestyle in his first international competition in 2009 during the Mare Nostrum Tour.

At the swimming world championships in Rome in 2009 on July 26th, Biedermann won gold in the 400 meter freestyle and at the same time broke Ian Thorpe's seven-year record by a hundredth of a second, which until then had been considered hard to beat by experts. Thorpe called him after the race and congratulated him with the words: "It wasn't just the suit, it was you". Two days later, he also secured the gold medal in the 200 meter freestyle and relegated 14-time Olympic and 18-time world champion Michael Phelps , who, however, had renounced the swimsuit, which was later banned, to second place. He had to admit defeat by 1.2 seconds and at the same time lost his world record, which Biedermann undercut by almost a second. It was Phelps' first loss at a major international event since the 2005 World Championships in Montreal. Together with Helge Meeuw , Hendrik Feldwehr and Benjamin Starke , Biedermann set a European record (3: 28.58 min) with the 4 × 100 meter relay in Rome, which is behind the world record (3: 27.28 min) swimming US Michael Phelps' quartet meant winning the silver medal.

Award ceremony at the 2015 World Cup

Despite meeting the standard, Biedermann decided not to take part in the 2014 World Short Course Championships in Doha . At the 2015 World Championships , he won bronze in the 200 meter freestyle. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he was over 200 meters freestyle and sixth with the German 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay. Then he ended his career.

Biedermann trained with Frank Embacher at SV Halle .

From 2010 to 2015 he was in a relationship with the swimmer Britta Steffen .
