Frank Embacher

Frank Embacher (born January 14, 1964 in Leipzig ) is a former German swimmer and current swimming coach. With more than 80 international medals, he is one of the most successful swimming coaches in Germany. Four of his trained athletes had participated in the Olympic Games: Stefan Pohl (2000), Paul Biedermann (2008, 2012, 2016), Daniela Schreiber (2012) and Theresa Michalak (2012).

Life

Career as an athlete

Embacher grew up in Berlin and trained at the gymnastics and sports club Berlin .

At the beginning of the 1980s Frank Embacher was one of the best back swimmers in the German Democratic Republic and won six medals at the GDR championships :

  • 1981 : Bronze over 100 m back
  • 1982 : Bronze over 200 m back
  • 1983 : Silver over 200 m back and bronze over 100 m back
  • 1985 : Silver over 100 m and silver over 200 m back

In 1983 Embacher qualified for the European Swimming Championships in Rome in the same year with his vice championship title over 200 m back . There he took 6th place. At the GDR short course championship in 1983 he was GDR champion over 100 m back.

Career as a coach

In 1992 Embacher completed his studies as a qualified sports teacher with a Trainer A license and worked as a trainer at SV Halle / Saale until the end of 2016 . From 1994 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2016 he was active there as a national training center. His employment contract was not extended by the German Swimming Association at the end of 2016 without giving a reason . Since August 2017, Embacher has been the head coach of the Saxon Swimming Association in Leipzig and looks after the top group of the SSG Leipzig .

Embacher and his athletes won over 80 international medals at world championships, European championships, junior world championships and junior European championships. His greatest successes include 5 world championship titles, 18 European championship titles and 88 German championship titles.

He also trained numerous athletes who were able to qualify for the Olympic Games. His most famous swimmer was Paul Biedermann, who u. a. Four times world champion (short and long track) and 13 times European champion as well as participated in three Olympic Games (2008, 2012 and 2016). Britta Steffen moved from Berlin to Halle after the Olympic Games in summer 2012 and trained with Frank Embacher, under whom she also won a world champion title, before ending her career in autumn 2013. With Stefan Pohl, Daniela Schreiber and Theresa Michalak, three other athletes in his training group were able to qualify for the Olympic Games. Torsten Spanneberg took part in European and World Championships under Embacher, then he moved to Berlin in 2000 and took part a. a. participated in the Olympic Games in 2000 (bronze medal won) and in 2004. Frank Embacher led his son Toni Embacher to the European Championships in 2006 and 2012 and to successful participations in the Junior European Championships with medal wins.

Several world, European and German records were improved by his swimmers (5 world records, 16 European records, 27 German records).

Personal

Frank Embacher married the GDR swimmer Cornelia Polit . Together they have a son, Toni Embacher, who was also very successful in German swimming.

  • 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012: Best trainer in the Halle region (Stiftung Sport Region Halle)
  • 2009: Entry in the Golden Book of the city of Halle / Saale
  • 2009: Central German Trainer Award
  • 2010, 2016: Trainer of the year in the "National Team" category and 2004 Trainer of the year in the "Youth and Junior National Team" category ( German Swimming Trainers Association )
