Moses Hogan
Moses George Hogan (born March 13, 1957 in New Orleans ; † February 11, 2003 ibid.) Was an American composer and arranger of choral music . He is best known for his arrangements of African American Negro spirituals . In addition, Hogan was also a renowned pianist and conductor . His best-known work is probably The Oxford Book of Spirituals , a collection of spirituals that was published by Oxford University Press in 2002 .
biography
In New Orleans , Hogan grew up with five siblings. The parents conveyed their passion for music to the children. Hogan attended New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) High School, which he graduated in 1975.
Hogan studied piano at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in 1979. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School .
As a pianist, Hogan won several competitions, including the 28th Annual Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition in New York . He returned to Louisiana State University , where he was offered a doctorate , which he did not accept.
Moses Hogan died of a brain tumor at the age of 45.
