GDR swimming championships

The GDR swimming championships were an annual competition from 1950 to 1990, in which a German champion of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) is chosen for various swimming disciplines in the men's and women's classes. Titles in the individual disciplines freestyle - chest -, back -, butterfly - and Medley and in the team disciplines freestyle relay and medley relay assigned via different routes. They were organized by the German Swimming Association of the GDR or its predecessor.

Overview

Zone championships

Zone championships were held between the end of World War II in 1945 and the establishment of the individual German states in divided Germany in 1949 . In 1947 a championship of all occupation zones took place in Frankfurt. In 1948 and 1949, two Eastern Zone Championships were held on the territory of the Soviet occupation zone.

While the German Democratic Republic existed as a state from 1949 to 1990, 41 GDR championships were held in swimming.
