GDR swimming championships in 1989
The GDR swimming championships were held for the 40th time in 1989 and took place from June 13th to 18th in Magdeburg's Elbe Swimming Hall, where the champions were determined on 32 courses (16 men / 16 women). The competition also served as a qualifying competition for the 1989 European Championships in Bonn . With eleven titles, SC Dynamo Berlin was the most successful team in this championship.
The sporting highlights of the championship were the GDR records of Ralph Färber over 100 meters chest, Thomas Müller over 200 meters chest and Patrick Kühl over 400 meters medley. Furthermore, the women from SC Dynamo Berlin set a GDR record for club relay over the 4 × 100 meter freestyle.
