Heike Friedrich, like the other former GDR top swimmers, is accused of having achieved her success through doping , which was systematically administered to top athletes by the state . This is confirmed by other testimonies, such as the former GDR swimmer Karen König , which was made in the course of the doping trials from 1998 to 2000 against the former GDR swimming coaches Michael Regner , Stefan Hetzer , Dieter Lindemann and Volker Frischke .

Specifically, it became known that in addition to Kristin Otto , Dagmar Hase and Daniela Hunger , Heike Friedrich also took illegal performance-enhancing substances at the 1989 European Swimming Championships in Bonn . The testosterone content of women corresponded to that of a normal man and was thus far above the normal female value.
