Elke Sehmisch (born May 4, 1955 in Leipzig ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Career

She achieved her first international title at the European Championships in Barcelona in 1970 , when she won the gold medal in both the 400 meter freestyle in a new European record time and the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay in a new world record time . With the Olympics in 1972 in Munich it was enough despite the new European record with the 4 x 100 meters freestyle relay to the silver medal, although she had set a world record in the flow. In 1971 in Bratislava and 1973 in Utrecht she won the European Cup with the women's national team.

In 1970 and 1972 she received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze for her sporting achievements .

resignation

After the first swimming world championships in 1973 in Belgrade , where she took two sixth places over 200 meters and 400 meters freestyle, she ended her career. Then followed a degree in psychology . Today she lives with her family as a resident psychologist in Leipzig. She has two daughters.
