Ines Diers (born November 2, 1963 in Rochlitz ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Career

She originally began her career as a back swimmer , only to later concentrate on the freestyle discipline. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , she was the 400 meter freestyle and Olympic champion with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay . A year later she won gold over 400 meters freestyle and silver over 800 meters freestyle at the European Championships .

Diers was able to improve the European record over 400 meters freestyle at the Olympic Games in Moscow and at the European Swimming Championships in Split .

In 1980 she was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit .

In 1982 she ended her swimming career.
