Camille Muffat (born October 28, 1989 in Nice ; † March 9, 2015 at Villa Castelli, La Rioja province , Argentina ) was a French swimmer . Their biggest success was the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London over 400 meters freestyle.

Career

Muffat first caught on internationally when she won the gold medal at the 2010 Short Course World Championships in Dubai over 200 meters freestyle and bronze with the relay over 4 × 200 meters freestyle. She had previously finished fifth in the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. At the European Championships in the same year she was able to become vice European champion with the relay over the same distance, but was only fourth in the 200 meters freestyle and narrowly missed a medal rank. At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai , Muffat was third in the 200 and 400 meter freestyle, and she was able to achieve fourth place in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Muffat won the 400 meter freestyle title, swam a silver medal in the 200 meter freestyle and came third in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay. In November of the same year she improved the world record over 800 meters freestyle to 8: 01.06 min at the French short course championships. Shortly afterwards she won the freestyle title over 200 meters at the European Short Course Championships in Chartres and in a new world record time of 3: 54.85 minutes over 400 meters. That same year she was by the sports daily L'Equipe on France's Athlete of the Year chosen.

On July 12, 2014, Muffat surprisingly announced the end of her career. Among other things, a dispute with her trainer Fabrice Pellerin is said to have led to this decision.

Muffat died on March 9, 2015 in a collision between two helicopters in La Rioja Province , Argentina .
