history
The city was founded in 1591 by Ramírez de Velasco , the then governor of the colonial province of Tucumán. Until the end of the 19th century, La Rioja remained the only place of any importance in the province.
At the end of the 19th century, the place had 8,000 inhabitants. In 1894, however, an earthquake almost completely destroyed the city, so that only very few buildings from the colonial era remain.
In 1934 the Roman Catholic diocese of La Rioja was established.
From the 1970s onwards, thanks to a successful development policy, the population grew rapidly, and the number of inhabitants tripled between 1975 and 2001.
economy
Up until the 1970s, La Rioja was an agricultural city that was particularly important as a center of viticulture in the area. The declaration of a special economic zone at the beginning of the 1970s brought a strong industrialization boost for the city, which today is one of the centers of the Argentine pharmaceutical industry (e.g. Bagó ).
