The Cathedral of La Rioja or the Cathedral Basilica of St. Nicholas ( Spanish Catedral Basílica de San Nicolás de Bari ) is a church in the city of La Rioja , capital of the province of the same name in northwestern Argentina . The cathedral of the diocese of La Rioja is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

In the earthquake of 1894, the entire city of La Rioja, including the Church of St. Nicholas, was destroyed. In its place, today's church was completed by 1910 and consecrated in 1912. With the creation of the diocese of La Rioja, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1934. In the sacristy there is a black portrait of Bishop Nicholas. The 1.44 meter high walnut carving from the 17th century comes from Peru. On June 29, 1920, Bishop Abel Bazán y Bustos led on behalf of Pope Benedict XV. a canonical coronation with a crown blessed by Pope Pius X. , which is celebrated annually in early July. 1955 awarded Pope Pius XII. the cathedral the title of minor basilica.

architecture

The church was designed by the architect Juan B. Arnaldi and mixes different historicist styles. Part of this eclecticism is the neo-Byzantine style in the facade, the neo-Gothic style of the bell towers and the Baroque- Italian proportions of the crossing dome over a drum . The colorful, single-nave basilica has a transept and chapels suggestive of side aisles. The barrel vaults are illuminated by stitch caps .

In the atrium is the mausoleum of Pedro Ignacio de Castro Barros, who represented the province in the Assembly of 1813 and in the Congress of Tucumán of 1816. Blessed Bishop Enrique Angelelli , a victim of the military dictatorship in Argentina in 1976, was buried inside the church .
