The Departamento Capital is located in the east of the La Rioja Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the departments of Castro Barros and Arauco , to the east by the province of Catamarca , to the south by the department of Chamical and to the west by the departments of General Ángel V. Peñaloza , Independencia , Chilecito and Sanagasta .

The capital of the Department Capital is La Rioja .
