The Famatina Department is located in the north of the La Rioja Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.
It borders the province of Catamarca to the north, the departments of San Blas de los Sauces and Sanagasta to the east, the Chilecito department to the south and the Vinchina department to the west .
The capital of the Famatina Department is the Famatina of the same name .
