The General Lamadrid Department is located in the northwest of the La Rioja Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered by the Vinchina Department to the north, the Chilecito Department to the east, the Coronel Felipe Varela Department to the south and the San Juan Province and Chile to the west .
