The Arauco Department is located in the northeast of the La Rioja Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered to the north and east by the province of Catamarca , to the south by the departments Capital and Castro Barros and to the west by the department of San Blas de los Sauces .
The capital of the Arauco department is Aimogasta .
