The Departamento Independencia is located in the west of the province of La Rioja in northwest Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered to the north by the departments of Coronel Felipe Varela , Chilecito and Capital , to the east by the department of General Ángel V. Peñaloza , to the south by the department of General Juan Facundo Quiroga and to the west by the province of San Juan .
The capital of the Department of Independencia is Patquía .
