The Chilecito Department is located in the center of the La Rioja Province in northwest Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.

It borders on the Famatina Department to the north, the Sanagasta and Capital Department to the east, the Independencia Department to the south and the Coronel Felipe Varela , General Lamadrid and Vinchina departments to the west .

The capital of the Chilecito department is the Chilecito of the same name .
