The Castro Barros department is located in the northeast of the La Rioja province in northwest Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province.
It is bordered by the Arauco Department to the north and the Capital Department to the east, the Sanagasta Department to the south and the Famatina and San Blas de los Sauces departments to the west .
