GDR doping
Officially, Thümer could not take part in the 1978 World Swimming Championships in West Berlin due to an injury, but while the state-decreed forced doping in GDR competitive sports was being dealt with by GDR doctors and sports officials in the GDR doping trial in 1998 before the Berlin Regional Court against four former GDR trainers and doctors, it became known that she got stuck at the ID check because of a positive doping test was feared. During the same process, files were presented that documented the doping doses of anabolic steroids at Petra Thümer, so that there are no longer any doubts about the unlawful achievement of her Olympic victories, European championship titles and world records.
