Petra Thümer (born January 29, 1961 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Life

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , she was Olympic champion in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle . A year later she won gold in the 200 m, 400 m and 800 m freestyle at the European Championships in Jönköping in 1977 .

In 1976 and 1977 she was able to improve the world record over 400 meters and 800 meters freestyle several times. In 1976 she was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit .

In 1979 she ended her career and became a photographer . In 1987 she was inducted into the hall of fame of international swimming .

GDR doping

Officially, Thümer could not take part in the 1978 World Swimming Championships in West Berlin due to an injury, but while the state-decreed forced doping in GDR competitive sports was being dealt with by GDR doctors and sports officials in the GDR doping trial in 1998 before the Berlin Regional Court against four former GDR trainers and doctors, it became known that she got stuck at the ID check because of a positive doping test was feared. During the same process, files were presented that documented the doping doses of anabolic steroids at Petra Thümer, so that there are no longer any doubts about the unlawful achievement of her Olympic victories, European championship titles and world records.
